BritishFriesians are currently evaluated on a Holstein genetic base,so comparisons should only be made with Friesians against Friesians.
The larger Holstein animal will have a higher maintenance requirement on an output for output basis, compared to the smaller Friesian.
Due to the formula used for PIN being weighted in favor of volume of milk, this also disadvantages the Friesian, which is more inclined to improve butterfat and protein %. Cell counts are lower and Life-span higher.
BRITISH FRIESIANS ARE DUE TO HAVE THEIR OWN GENETIC BASE IN 2005
Both Holsteins and Friesians are registered in the HUK herd book, and so cattle do not lose their pedigree status when crossed with one another, and % is recorded for all animals. For full British Friesian status the qualifying percentage is 87.5%.
A scheme now exists specifically for the classification of British Friesians. This classification is now appearing on the registration certificates, currently denoted by the prefix 'BF'.
